The Congressional Gold Medal for the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders

The Doolittle Tokyo Raiders was a group eighty men from all walks of life who flew into history on April 18, 1942. They were all volunteers and this was a very dangerous mission. Sixteen B-25 bombers took off from the deck of the USS Hornet, led by (then Col.) Jimmy Doolittle. They were to fly over Japan, drop their bombs and fly on to land in a part of China that was still free. Of course, things do not always go as planned.

The months following the attack on Pearl Harbor were the darkest of the war, as Imperial Japanese forces rapidly extended their reach across the Pacific. Our military was caught off guard, forced to retreat, and losing many men in the fall of the Philippines, leading to the infamous Bataan Death March.

By spring, 1942, America needed a severe morale boost. The raid on Tokyo on April 18, 1942, certainly provided that – cheering the American military and public. Yet, the Doolittle Raid meant so much more, proving to the Japanese high command that their home islands were not invulnerable to American attacks and causing them to shift vital resources to their defense. Two months later that decision would play a role in the outcome of the Battle of Midway, the American victory that would begin to turn the tide in the Pacific War.

In order to honor all the Raiders, past and present, for their valor, courage and patriotism, we are working to get the Congressional Gold Medal awarded while we still have three members who are able to travel to receive the award.

We need your help!

Please contact your Senators and ask them to co-sponsor S.381, which is the Senate bill authorizing the Congressional Gold Medal, and contact your Representative and ask them to co-sponsor H.R.1209, which is the House bill. Both bills must pass by two-thirds majority.

REQUESTING SUPPORT BY BECOMING A CO-SPONSOR OF S.381

CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL FOR THE DOOLITTLE TOKYO RAIDERS

Dear Senator

The Doolittle raid on Tokyo on April 18, 1942 and its impact on the course of the war in the Pacific is well documented, yet after all this time, these valiant men have not received the recognition that they deserve for their valor, courage and bravery. Senate bill S.381 seeks to rectify this by awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to the four surviving members of that 80 man unit. Time is of the essence. Earlier this year we had five surviving Raiders and now only three of the remaining four are able to travel to receive the award once it is approved. The only way this can happen is for Senators like you to become co-sponsors so that this can be brought forward for a vote.

The four remaining Doolittle Tokyo Raiders are:

bulletLt. Col. Richard Cole, co-pilot crew # 1. Cole stayed in China flying the Hump and became part of the First Air Commandos. He was born in Dayton, OH and now lives in Comfort, TX.
bulletLt. Col. Robert Hite, co-pilot crew # 16. Hite spent 44 harrowing months as a POW in Japan. He was born in Odell, TX and now lives in Nashville, TN.
bulletLt. Col. Edward Saylor, engineer crew # 15. Just days before the Raiders took off from the USS Hornet, Saylor was called upon to tear down and repair his plane’s engine. He was born in Brusett, MT and now lives in Puyallup, WA.
bulletS. Sgt. David Thatcher, engineer-gunner crew # 7. He was featured in the movie "30 Seconds over Tokyo". Although injured following the crash landing on the China coast, Thatcher gave critical first aid to his gravely injured fellow crew members, saving their lives. He was born in Bridger, MT and now lives in Missoula, MT.

We Americans need to remember our history; young Americans need to be made aware of it. This heroic generation of Americans is rapidly disappearing – we should honor their efforts and sacrifices before it is too late.

Rep. Pete Olson - HR 1209 - Congressional Gold Medal for the Doolittle Raiders

The Doolittle Raid
• On April 18, 1942, Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle led 79 airmen and sixteen B-25 bombers on a daring and unprecedented attack on the Japanese mainland to avenge the attack on Pearl Harbor.

• While most of the airmen safely bailed out or crash landed into China, three men died while crash landing and eight more were captured by the Japanese.

• Only 73 of the 80 Doolittle Raiders returned home after the raid.

Impact of the Doolittle Raid on the War in the Pacific
• Japanese focused their military efforts on destroying the American aircraft carriers, which led to the Japanese attack at Midway.

• During the Battle of Midway, Japan lost four of its six aircraft carriers, over 300 aircraft, and a majority of its best pilots.

• With its Pacific forces decimated, Japan suffered defeat after defeat as the Americans went on the offensive, "island-hopping" their way to Okinawa and ultimately to victory.

The Doolittle Raiders
• The Doolittle Raiders hail from 35 states, including 13 from Texas, 5 from Massachusetts, 5 from Oregon, 4 from California, 4 from New York, and 4 from Ohio

• Only 4 Raiders are still alive - they live in Texas, Tennessee, Washington, and Montana.

• The last Doolittle Raider reunion will take place April 17-20 in Fort Walton Beach, FL.

H.R. 1209 - Award a Congressional Gold Medal to the Doolittle Raiders
• Authorizes a Congressional Gold Medal to be awarded to the Doolittle Raiders.

• The Gold Medal will be available for display at the National Museum of the US Air Force.

• Authorizes NO money - the Gold Medal is paid for by the sale of duplicate bronze medals by the US Mint.
